I think the reason why the reviews just mah mah was 1) They may have read the graphic novel before. 2) They were comparing it with other superheroes' movies like Spiderman, Xmen etc. 3) They were comparing it with The Batman series by Chris Nolan.
I like it, I give it 3.5/5.
The original might be far more complicated than the movie. The slow pace may leave the 'usual superhero movie' fan impatience. Need I say more about Chris' Batman?
It's not easy to cover a story like that I guess. But for the fight scenes, go watch it man.
